Jonathan Holt Shannon

Jonathon Holt Shannon is an assistant professor in the department of anthropology at Hunter College of the City University of New York. His dissertation was the basis for his book, Among the Jasmine Trees: Music and Modernity in Contemporary Syria, published by Wesleyan in June 2006. Shannon has written a number of articles, reviews, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries for such publications as the journal Ethnology, the book Ethnomusicology: A Contemporary Reader, and The Encyclopedia of Islam. He has presented papers at annual meetings of both the American Anthropological Association and the American Folklore Society, and spoken at the New York Academy of Sciences, the Arabic Cultural Center of Damascus, and at many other venues.
