Sarah Caldwell

Sarah Caldwell (1924–2006) founded the Opera Company of Boston in 1957 and was the first woman to conduct the Metropolitan Opera in New York City (1975). She also appeared with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra. She is the co-author of Challenges: A Memoir of My Life in Opera, with Rebecca Matlock.
