Kennedy Center Terrace Theater 2700 F St NW, Washington, DC 20566

Compelling ensembles Imani Winds and Harlem Quartet, along with librettist and orator A.B. Spellman, present Jeff Scott’s Passion for Bach and Coltrane, the 2024 Grammy Award® winner in the Classical Compendium category.

“Aligned in promoting diversity in the arts, Imani Winds and Harlem Quartet are both committed to the commissioning, composing, and arranging of new works, particularly by African American and Latin composers. This powerhouse ensemble pairing, along with orator and poet A.B. Spellman, presents Jeff Scott’s Passion for Bach and Coltrane, the 2024 Grammy Award® winner in the Classical Compendium category. Based on music by Johann Sebastian Bach and John Coltrane, the work is a Passion oratorio that combines classical and jazz music, interwoven with Spellman’s orated poems.”

A. B. Spellman is an acclaimed American poet, music critic, and arts administrator. He is widely recognized as a leading figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, a cultural and literary movement that emphasized Black identity, pride, and artistic expression. Between the Night and Its Music brings together A. B. Spellman’s early work with a collection of powerful new poems.
