Based on music by Johann Sebastian Bach and John Coltrane, the work is a Passion oratorio that combines classical and jazz music, interwoven with Spellman’s orated poems.”

He is widely recognized as a leading figure in the Black Arts Movement of the 1960s and 1970s, a cultural and literary movement that emphasized Black identity, pride, and artistic expression.
