Poetry at Bennington welcomes Peter Gizzi and John Yau for a public reading of their poetry on Wednesday, November 20th, from 7-8pm.
Peter Gizzi is the author of many collections of poetry, including Now It’s Dark (2020), Archeophonics (2016), a finalist for the National Book Award, Threshold Songs (2011), and In Defense of Nothing: Selected Poems, 1987–2011 (2014), a finalist for the LA Times Book Award. He has also published several limited-edition chapbooks, folios, and artist books. Marjorie Perloff has called him “a master of the mot juste and of sound structure;” Robert Creeley, “one of the most exceptional poets of his generation.” Adrienne Rich has said “his disturbing lyricism is like no other;” and John Ashbery thought him “the most exciting new poet to come along in quite a while.” He lives in Holyoke, MA.
John Yau has published over fifty books of poetry, fiction, and art criticism. “His most recent books of poetry include Tell It Slant (Omnidawn, 2023), Bijoux in the Dark (Letter Machine Editions, 2018), and Further Adventures in Monochrome (Copper Canyon, 2012). Born in Lynn, Massachusetts to Chinese emigrants, he is the founding editor of the small press Black Square Editions and Professor of Critical Studies at Rutgers Unviersity’s Mason Gross School of the Arts. His work has been honored with the Jackson Poetry Prize; fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Ingram-Merrill Foundation, and the Guggenheim Foundation; and the Rabkin Prize for excellence in visual arts journalism.”
